Marion Jones, who became the first woman in 50 years to win the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump at the USA Championships, was honored as the International Amateur Athletic Federation's female athlete of the year, a prize she also won in 1997.

The men's award was presented to Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie, who set four world records (2,000 and 3,000 indoors, and 5,000 and 10,000 outdoors).
