The Alden Central School Board has approved a field trip to the nation's capital by fifth-graders.
More than a dozen parents urged the board to ignore protests from the few parents who campaigned against the trip planned for May.
"Everyone whose kids went last year totally supports this," said parent Dawn Blood. "We think it's a great experience and they'll get a lot of out of it."
This is the third year the school has offered the chaperoned, three-day excursion.
The board had received letters from a couple parents who wanted the annual event terminated on the grounds the children are too young for such an extended trip so far from home. Alternative activities are planned at the school if parents elect not to have their child take part in the Washington, D.C., trip, said officials.
