Police want to question the driver of a truck that dropped a 7-foot section of pipe that later struck and killed film director Alan Pakula as he drove along a Long Island highway.

Pakula, 70, the director of "All the President's Men," "Klute" and "Sophie's Choice," was killed Thursday when a car kicked up the pipe and sent it crashing through his windshield.

The case is being investigated as "a fatal tragic car accident," and police were searching for the driver of the tractor-trailer believed to have dropped the pipe, police Lt. Frank Stallone said.

A motorist had alerted police that the pipe fell from the truck, and a Highway Patrol officer was traveling to the scene at the time of the accident, Stallone said.
