Legendary Broadway composers John Kander and Fred Ebb will be sending a $5,000 grant to the Niagara University Theater Department.

The songwriting team that produced the scores for such hits as "Cabaret," "Chicago," "Zorba" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" are receiving a $10,000 prize Monday in New York, the Japan Musical Award.

Under the terms of the award, half of the prize money is to be directed to a nonprofit organization, and Kander and Ebb have chosen Niagara.

Kander and Ebb attended a Niagara production of "Chicago" four years ago and were highly impressed.

"We were aware of their intense devotion to musical theater," Ebb said. "The students were very gifted, very charming and wonderfully cast."
