Retiring Allegany State Park Assistant Director Jim Rich, who left his post this month, was honored at a reception this week at the Old Library Restaurant in Olean by members of the Cattaraugus County Tourism Promotion Agency and its board of directors.

Rich was one of the first members of the TPA.

"Twenty years ago we didn't know how to promote the area," Rich said, adding the group focused on the Ellicottville and Salamanca areas.

The group's recent strides can be measured in results seen following the TPA's representation at a recent Cleveland tourism trade show.

"We had an immediate response from Cleveland (when many) came to stay in (Allegany State) Park with horses and trailers," Rich said.

Acting Assistant Park Director George Wyman was chosen last month to assume Rich's post as TPA vice president.

Rich said he and his wife, Mary, who is leaving her post as Cattaraugus County Jury Commissioner on Nov. 30, will spend the winter in Florida.
