This letter is in response to the woman who opposes the ban on smoking in restaurants. Her statement, "smoking and especially second-hand smoke should be the least of anyone's worry," is the single most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. According to her, lung cancer, emphysema and heart attacks are all just a petty nuisance.
I am 48 years old and suffered a near fatal heart attack in June because I've smoked for the last 30 years. Six weeks ago, with the help of the American Cancer Society, I was finally able to quit a very dangerous and filthy habit.
It's only been a short period of time but I already love being on the "other side." I love the fact that my heart is growing stronger and my lungs are starting to clean themselves. I love the fact that my clothes smell fresh and my house smells clean. And I love it that she and her friends are staying home, because it lessens my risk for another heart attack and gives us all a little more fresh air to breathe.
