SHOOTINGS BY BORDER PATROL INFLAMES TIES WITH MEXICO

U.S. Border Patrol agents have shot and killed two rock-throwing Mexican immigrants in recent days, inflaming tensions on both sides of one of the world's sharpest divides between rich and poor.

The weekend incidents in the San Diego-Tijuana area closely followed two others in which San Diego-based agents fired on Mexicans purportedly seeking to run them over with cars, the Border Patrol said Tuesday.

The U.S. FBI investigates all Border Patrol shootings, but the Mexican consulate in San Diego said Monday it wanted a more thorough probe by the U.S. Justice Department and warned that the shootings threatened bilateral relations.
