We can all relax now. The News has determined that President Clinton should not be impeached. The reasons: Extramarital affairs are commonplace in this country, and other presidents have had affairs outside their marriages.
While he probably also lied under oath, infidelity and perjury do not meet the definitions for "high crimes and misdemeanors" in the Constitution.
Finally, impeachment proceedings would be too disruptive for the country and the government's business, and the office of the president must be maintained for future presidents to operate efficiently.
By this reasoning, future presidents would be free to perjure themselves, lie to Congress, their staff and the people, carry on sexual relations outside marriage with government employees in government offices provided they were effective leaders and scored well in all the daily polls.
Clinton has betrayed the trust of the American people. He has disgraced the office and set a terrible precedent for future presidents.
Clinton certainly caused serious disruption of efficient government operation by lying, denying and interfering these past seven months. Should we just forget that? The Tonkin Gulf lies of another president brought death and heartache to thousands of American and Asian families. Should we trust another proven liar in the White House?
If we do not demand and expect more from our elected officials, this is the type of shameless conduct we can expect and perhaps deserve in the future. Clinton has said that he will never resign. Censure is a meaningless exercise. That leaves impeachment. It's the only way to go.
