CORPS TO DECONTAMINATE, NOT RAZE, HOPKINS ST. SITE

Work crews will decontaminate rather than demolish a slightly radioactive industrial site on Hopkins Street, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today.

Decontamination work will generate some low-level radioactive wastes that will be disposed of in a licensed facility under the federal Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program.

The work will center on the former Bliss & Laughlin Steel Co. site at 110 Hopkins St.

In 1952, uranium rods were shipped to a single large building there for machining and straightening, and some radioactivity has been detected in several floor areas and three overhead rafters.
