PICNIC FOUNDER -- Capt. Gabe DiBernardo, a respected law man who headed some of the stranger murder investigations in Niagara County, has retired after 38 years in the North Tonawanda Police Department. His tenure included 12 years as chief of detectives, having headed hundreds of investigations. But Di Bernardo said one of his proudest accomplishments as a cop had nothing to do with arresting criminals. With help from local business men, DiBernardo founded the North Tonawanda High School's annual Senior Picnic. Police get food and drink donations for the annual bash and officers volunteer to serve the refreshments. "It all started 19 years ago. The seniors used to have their own pic nic. We had a very bad near-riot incident, with students drinking and throwing beer cans and stones at our officers, including me," Di Bernardo recalled. "So we started an alcohol-free picnic sponsored by the Police Department, and it has been a big success ever since." DiBernardo and his wife of 39 years, Beverly, plan to buy a mo tor home and do some traveling. ...
