Pearl Richardson, an active churchwoman and retired secretary for the United Steelworkers union in Buffalo, died Friday (Sept. 25,1998) in Buffalo General Hospital. She was 81.

The former Pearl Echols graduated from School 31, Hutchinson-Central High School and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute.

She worked as a secretary for the United Steelworkers from 1953 until her retirement in 1981.

Before that, she was the secretary for Bethel AME Church, which became an integral part of her life. She was founding treasurer and financial manager of the Bethel AME Federal Credit Union for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Richardson received the 1981 Black Achievers in Industry Award.

In 1997, she was presented a certificate of appreciation by the Buffalo Area Council of Churches for outstanding ecumenical and community services. Throughout her lifetime, she volunteered her services as a scribe for friends with little formal education.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Bennett; three sisters, Mattie Anderson, Mary Griffin and Claudia Ann Taylor; a brother, William Griffin; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bethel AME Church, 1525 Michigan Ave. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
