George A. Newhart Jr., 52, a Vietnam veteran and former truck driver, died Sunday (Sept. 27, 1998) in his 10th Street home, under the care of Niagara Hospice, after a two-year illness.
Newhart was born in Pittston, Pa., and served in Vietnam from 1963 to 1966 as a member of theArmy's 568th Engineer Corps.
Later, he was a captain in the Ranger Section of the Civil Air Patrol and received its Meritorious Service Award in 1972.
He moved to Niagara Falls in 1978.
He drove trucks for Matlack Trucking Co. for two years, Rose Trucking Co. for one year, M.L. Young Trucking Co. of North Tonawanda for three years and the Niagara Gazette for six years. He was a member of the Teamsters.
Newhart worked as a clerk at 19th Street Book and News Co. for two years before retiring in 1996 because of illness.
Survivors include his wife, the former Deanna Mulholland, and two daughters, Margaret Mae and Crystal.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Otto Redanz Funeral Home, Michigan Avenue and 10th Street. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston.
