The AFL/CIO Niagara/Orleans Labor Council gave two scholarships to high school students and honored a citizen of the year at its meeting Saturday.

The events took place during the council's 15th Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Dance at the UAW 686 Club in Lockport.

High school students Karen Schmelzinger and Michael Foster each won $500 scholarships to help further their college educations.

James "Jack" Kyzmir, president of the UAW Retirees, was named Labor Citizen of the Year. He was cited for his "continuous efforts on behalf of his union, community services projects and political action."

Kyzmir is past president of Local 686 and past president of the AFL/CIO Niagara/Orleans Labor Council.
