Western New York and the high school athletic community lost a true champion with the recent death of former News sports reporter Chuck Korbar. With Chuck, high school sports was a passion. He worked tirelessly to make sure all the contests were reported. His accomplishments were many. He remained president of the New York State Sportswriters Association until the end, an organization he helped form.
In 1972, he polled major-league baseball scouts in and around WNY, and picked the first-ever All-WNY Baseball team, a squad that this year announced its 26th edition. In the middle 1970s, he established the Buffalo Evening News senior athlete award. For many years he published the WNY amateur basketball newsletter. These are but a few of his endeavors. His efforts to give high school athletes as much exposure as possible were endless.
High school sports has lost a champion. I have lost a friend. Godspeed, Chuck.
