Democratic gubernatorial candidate Peter Vallone has won the backing of the city's powerful public school teachers' union, published reports said Friday.

The 133,000-member United Federation of Teachers on Thursday endorsed Vallone's campaign against Republican Gov. Pataki, who is seeking re-election.

The union's endorsement follows Pataki's vetoes in April that eliminated $500 million for school construction, $77 million in salary increases for urban teachers and funding for professional development programs for teachers.
