MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER IN SLAYING OF NURSE

An Erie County Court jury Thursday night convicted James Ruttlen of second-degree murder in the strangulation of Buffalo psychiatric nurse Geraldine Gaines last New Year's Eve.

Judge Timothy J. Drury set sentencing for Nov. 18. Ruttlen was also convicted of first-degree robbery, criminal possession of a weapon and unauthorized used of a motor vehicle.

Ruttlen, 44, who did not testify, has been jailed since he was arrested on Jan. 3. Ms. Gaines, 43, was strangled in the basement of her Wyoming Avenue home last Dec. 31 shortly after telling a friend on the telephone that she heard Ruttlen knocking on her front door.
