It has been said that needlepoint makes a room look as if it has evolved over time. A needlepoint pillow, in particular, gives the eye something special to look at -- whether you make it yourself or buy it completed.
"A needlepoint piece, because it is hand-done, gives a special feeling of warmth that always makes a room feel more homey than sterile. You can take a black leather couch and put a silk needlepoint pillow on it, and the pillow will soften the whole look," said Suzanne Littlefield, from the Gnome's Needle Ltd., a needlepoint specialty store in Snyder.
The opulent Victorian look -- lush roses and wreaths -- never goes out of style.
Blue and white designs, like the ones shown here from the Colonial Williamsburg collection, also are classics, along with Oriental blue willow designs and Delft-inspired patterns from Holland.
"A lot of these are museum reproductions," Ms. Littlefield said.
"There also is a trend right now into animal prints -- but not just the normal tigers and lions. We're also seeing giraffe and zebra prints," she added.
