DRIVER SURRENDERS IN HIT AND RUN

An Albany-area man turned himself in after hearing news reports that police were investigating the hit-and-run death of a 24-year-old man found dead along a suburban road.

Donald Smith, 47, of Cohoes turned himself in to Town of Colonie police late Monday night after seeing newscasts of the death of Jeffrey Deters of Rensselaerville.

Deters' body was found Monday morning alongside a busy road. Police said auto parts found at the scene of the accident indicated that a Ford pick-up truck or Bronco was involved.

Smith was driving a green Ford pick-up. He told police he thought he had hit a deer or other animal, until he saw the news reports. He said he didn't find anything when he stopped to investigate.

No charges were filed against Smith, but police said the investigation was continuing.
