Funeral services were held Saturday for Canio F. Loretto Sr., 81, who operated a 77-acre grape vineyard in Brant with a son until retiring about 20 years ago.

After attending North Collins High School, Loretto took over operation of his father's farm along with several brothers. While largely a grape farmer, he also grew other crops, and in the 1960s and 1970s was twice named "Strawberry King" at the Brant Strawberry Festival.

He and the former Dorothy Messecar were married in 1939. She died in 1990.

A member of the Farmers Co-op, Loretto had a stall at the Clinton-Bailey Farmers Market and supplied produce to area restaurants and stores.

He is survived by two sons, James of Villa Park, Ill., and Canio Jr. of Brant; a daughter, Janet Ring of Brant; three brothers, Joseph of Bradenton, Fla., Vincent of Eggertsville and Leonard of Brant; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
