Adam Soffian, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound Coral Springs (Fla.) High School sophomore, missed the start of his school's junior varsity season because no one can find cleats to fit his size 19 feet.
Twelve of 30 pro football teams contacted say they have no leftover shoes in his size, with the nearby Miami Dolphins saying three of their players wear a size 17, the largest on the team.
Soffian did have a pair of size 18 cleats that he practiced in last spring. It wasn't until the family returned from summer vacation and Adam tried the old shoes on that he realized they no longer fit. He practices in sneakers but they aren't safe enough for him to play in a game.
"They only make them up to 18 for the public," Adam said of the national manufacturers. "It's pretty disappointing they only make bigger cleats for pro athletes. There are normal people that need larger sizes too."
