Buffalo police Saturday charged a Lombard Street man in the attempted rape and assault of a Bryson Street woman, whom police said ended up escaping by grabbing a steak knife and stabbing her assailant.

Police arrested Freddie L. Lewis, 54, at his apartment following the earlier attack of a woman in his apartment at 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Lewis is accused of keeping the victim in his apartment for several hours against her will, choking her and attempting to rape her, according to police. Police charged him with first-degree attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment, second-degree harassment and third-degree assault.
