JENNIFER MEKA of Clarence has been named Miss Teen of New York 1998.

The 17-year-old daughter of Richard and Donna Meka competed in a field of 113 teen-age girls from across the state to win the title Aug. 23 in Syracuse. She also won a $2,000 educational savings bond, $500 to give to her school and the opportunity to compete for the national title in November in Utah and nearly $35,000 worth of scholarships, awards and prizes.

Jennifer graduated from Clarence High School in June and will be a freshman at Canisius College this fall. She will major in secondary education. Her minor will be in the classics. She took five years of Latin in middle and high school. She wants to be a Latin teacher.

In addition to the $2,000 educational savings bond from the Miss Teen Program, she has a scholarship from ITT Industries.

The Miss Teen of New York is not a beauty pageant. Each candidate is rated in six areas: scholastic record, achievement and service to school and community, personal development of talents and skills, a general awareness written test, personality projection in formal wear and the interview with judges. . . .

DOG WALK -- The Second Chance Sheltering Network Inc., and the PetWise Stores are the people behind the "First Annual Best Friend Walk-A-Thon" to be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Amherst University at Buffalo Bike Path.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and the 1.5-mile walk will begin at noon. The walk-a-thon will begin at St. Rita's Lane, and every dog gets a prize. Pre-registration can be done at all PetWise stores for $15 per dog. Registration the day of the walk will cost $18. There will be a grand prize for the person with the most sponsor donations.
