I would like to commend Thomas Heinz, an administrative law judge for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, for penalizing Joseph Gruzdaitis $50,000 for telling an African-American he doesn't rent to blacks and spitting at her.

Our society can never become complacent when it involves racial injustice. It has been 30 years since the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, two of our nation's greatest civil-rights leaders.

Although both would have been deeply troubled by the actions of Mr. Gruzdaitis, they would have been pleased by the work of both Judge Heinz and the local fair-housing group, Housing Opportunities Made Equal, Inc.

As a nation, we can never stop striving for full human equality.
