HMO IS ASKED TO WIDEN NETWORK OF HOSPITALS

Kenmore Mayor John Beaumont has called on Independent Health and the CGF Health System to reconsider a recently announced deal that would make CGF the exclusive hospital network for the HMO's Medicare members.

Beaumont, a candidate for the Assembly in the 140th District, said such a move would "severely limit" the ability of senior citizens in his area to use Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Under the arrangement, members of Independent Health's Medicare health maintenance organization, Encompass 65, can no longer use the five hospitals of the Catholic Health System and Bry-Lin Hospital after Jan. 1 except for emergencies.

In addition, use of Erie County Medical Center and Roswell Park Cancer Institute would be restricted to highly specialized services.

"We're talking about inconvenience and uncertainty for vulnerable seniors who are accustomed to receiving medical care at their local hospital," he said.
