The Erie County Water Authority won bragging rights as the county's best-tasting drinking water, as judged by 120 weekend visitors to Waterfest at Erie Basin Marina.
Citizens Campaign for the Environment and the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning sponsored the third annual county water tasting contest, which consisted of six different samples of water, including four from municipalities and one each of bottled spring water and filtered water.
The Water Authority water that thrilled testers' taste buds was taken from a tap in Amherst. Buffalo's water captured second place among the municipal water used in the contest, followed by Akron and Holland, respectively.
The bottled spring water placed second to last in overall taste testing, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is of low quality, organizers reported; taste can be affected by several factors, including turbidity, chlorine added during treatment and the season.
