STATE TAXPAYERS MUST HELP FINANCE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Several letters have appeared in The Buffalo News on the Catholic school teachers and the Diocese of Buffalo regarding just wages and the raising of money (bingo, raffles and fund- raisers). None of these were the main reason we have low-paid teachers, parishes with schools that are almost insolvent and parents who are next to the poor house because of the costs associated with their children going to Catholic schools.

The main reason for these travesties is New York State and its discriminatory practices against Catholic school children, their parents and their teachers. It is a state responsibility to educate all children living within the state.

Enough is enough. It's time for a wake-up call! It's time for the bashing of Catholic teachers and the diocese to end.

Teachers, parents and students want, need and are entitled to financial help from the state so that teachers can be paid properly and the yoke lifted from the parents and teachers.

If the state continues to abdicate its financial responsibility, it is time for all Catholic schools to close for a day, a week or a year. It's time to stop buying Lotto tickets and paying property taxes until the state assumes its rightful obligation to all children within the state.
