Officials held a kickoff ceremony Saturday for the face lift of the Freedom Memorial at Grider Street and Northland Avenue that was erected in 1944 to honor those who lost their lives in war.

The monument, erected by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1488, had suffered from vandalism and neglect. It has four pillars representing freedom from want and fear, and freedom of worship and speech. Rededication is planned when restoration is completed.
