A maintenance man for Deveaux Apartments was arrested Friday for allegedly intercepting, forging and cashing a money order a woman had sent to the company to pay the rent on her Lafayette Avenue apartment, Detective Frank Coney said.

Norman F. Barner, 35, of University Court, who is no longer employed by Deveaux Apartments, was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny at Police Headquarters, Coney said.

He is accused of taking the money order from the company office mail drop in July, using hairspray to remove the company name from the order, placing his own name on it and cashing it at the Military Road Tops Market, Coney said.
