PROBATION VIOLATOR GETS 1-YEAR TERM

Stephen T. Banko IV was sentenced Friday in Cheektowaga Town Court to a year in jail for violating terms of his probation.

Banko, of Harding Road, Buffalo, is the 23-year-old son of Stephen T. Banko III, a top aide to Mayor Masiello.

Cheektowaga Justice Thomas Kolbert sentenced Banko to a year in the Erie County Correctional Facility after Banko pleaded guilty to a probation violation.

Banko was charged with petit larceny and resisting arrest in October 1996 for trying to steal a $16 compact disk from Kmart on Walden Avenue. Kolbert gave him three years probation.

He violated probation after testing positive for drugs and being thrown out of drug counseling, but Kolbert gave him one more chance, court officials said. Banko violated probation again in March, officials said.

He had a court appearance in July but escaped from court officers and ran out the court's back door as he was being escorted into the courtroom. Banko still has to appear in court on charges pertaining to that incident, court officials added.
