A Buffalo jury Friday ordered insurance carriers for a Chautauqua County osteopath to pay $788,000 to the family of an Irving woman who died of a heart condition seven years ago.

After a monthlong wrongful-death trial before State Supreme Court Justice Frank A. Sedita Jr., the jury deliberated almost seven hours before issuing the verdict against Dr. Steven Barnes of Irving in the death of Deborah Hemmerling on Jan. 14, 1991.

Rosanne Gugino, attorney for Mrs. Hemmerling's husband, David, and her two children, said Barnes was accused of failing to send Mrs. Hemmerling to a cardiologist and an appropriate hospital for treatment of a disease of her heart sac that caused her death at age 38.

Court officials said attorneys for Barnes' insurance carriers are considering a possible appeal of the jury verdict.
