SEARCH LAUNCHED FOR TEEN MISSING IN NIAGARA RIVER

Canadian and U.S. authorities searched the lower Niagara River for several hours late Thursday after a 17-year-old Brampton, Ont., boy apparently slipped and fell into the river and was swept away by the swift current.

Canadian authorities declined to release the victim's identity or details of the incident.

However, state parks police in Niagara Falls, N.Y., said it appeared the teen-ager and family members were walking along the river at Niagara Glen when he slipped and fell into the river. Family members were unsuccessful in attempts to reach him, police added.

State parks police said they learned about the incident at 8:15 p.m. and joined the search, which involved the U.S. Coast Guard, area fire companies and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department. The search was suspended late Thursday night.
