Mayor Masiello, North Council Member Dale Zuchlewski and other officials broke ground Thursday for a $318,000 project to landscape Towpath Park at the foot of Hertel Street in Riverside.

The park, situated along a former section of the Erie Canal, takes its name from the path that ran beside the canal. When the park is completed, it will provide waterfront access for Riverside and Black Rock residents.

Plans call for developing the park with plants, benches and other recreation improvements, including a walkway, which will be linked to Buffalo's Riverwalk, according to Zuchlewski.

The city purchased land several years ago for $450,000 and plans to spend about $500,000 to construct the facility.
