NOVOTNA, GRAF ADVANCE AT PILOT PEN

Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna beat Amelie Mauresmo, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), to advance to the semifinals of the Pilot Pen International in New Haven, Conn., and Steffi Graf continued her comeback in dominating fashion with 6-3, 6-0 victory over Amanda Coetzer.

Top-seeded defending champion Lindsay Davenport made her first appearance in the tournament and advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Anke Huber.

Elsewhere:

Third-seeded Cedric Pioline, fourth-seeded Michael Chang and fifth-seeded Thomas Muster advanced to the quarterfinals in the MFS Pro Tennis Championships in Brookline, Mass.

Pioline, a former finalist in the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, outclassed Australian Andrew Ilie, 6-4, 6-3. Muster, the 1995 French Open champion, beat the baseline-hugging Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 6-2, 6-4.

Chang overcame hard-hitting Dane Kenneth Carlsen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Australia's Patrick Rafter, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense, beat Martin Damm of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y.
