Memorial services for Gladys Unger Coon, 86, of Eggertsville, retired accounts-payable supervisor of the former Williams Gold Refinery, will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 12 in University Presbyterian Church, 3330 Main St. Burial will be in Lancaster Rural Cemetery.
Mrs. Coon, a native of Buffalo, died Tuesday (Aug. 25, 1998) at her residence after a long illness.
She graduated from Fosdick-Masten High School in 1928 and attended the University of Buffalo. She retired from the gold refinery in 1977 and then became the tea room hostess at the former Wm. Hengerer department store in Amherst.
Mrs. Coon was an ordained elder and deacon at University Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school there. She also directed Christmas pageants at the church. She was past royal matron of Jenny Lind Court 163, Order of the Amaranth, and was a 50-year member of Amherst Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
She had been a Republican committeewoman for the 29th District in Amherst and was president of the Amherst Republican Women's Club from 1965 to 1968 and again in 1984. The club named her a life member in 1988. She received the Republican Party's Community Service Award in 1994.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Kobee and Virginia Lee Coon, both of Eggertsville; a brother, Carl F. Unger of Randallstown, Md.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
