AMHERST CAR BURGLARY MAY BE PART OF A STRING

Amherst police, who have been investigating a series of car larcenies throughout the town in past weeks, said a larceny reported by a town resident early Thursday might be the car thieves' biggest haul yet.

A Berehaven Drive resident reported to police at 6:23 a.m. Thursday that $10,190 in cameras and camera equipment had been stolen from her vehicle during the night, Amherst Asst. Chief Frank Olesko said.

Thieves gained entrance to the car by smashing the driver's side window, Olesko said.

The latest car larceny is in an area of the town where a string of such overnight break-ins have taken place lately, according to police.

About $3,000 in merchandise -- including cell phones, CD players, and radios -- had been taken from a number of cars in the Berehaven Drive area, including about $2,000 in merchandise taken from one vehicle, according to police.
