LIFE TERM SOUGHT FOR PERSISTENT THIEF

Prosecutors intend to seek a life term for Warren Freeney for stealing a car and dragging women up to 40 feet while stealing their purses.

Freeney, 38, of Humboldt Parkway, was convicted of first-degree robbery, forgery, reckless driving, and stolen-car and stolen-property charges. Prosecutor Gary W. Hackbush said he will seek a 20-year-to-life term for Freeney as a persistent violent felon.

Hackbush said Freeney got out of prison in March 1997, was arrested in a stolen car that July 2, and gave police a false name.

He was released on bail on Aug. 9, stole a car the same day, and grabbed the purse of a 67-year-old woman, dragging her 10 feet and breaking her foot. Two hours later Freeney, in the same car, stole a woman's purse in a Depew supermarket lot, dragging her 40 feet.
