The Aug. 18 Buffalo News contained an editorial, "Resolve Seneca land claim quickly." It contained this sentence: "Furthermore, the word from Grand Island is that title insurance costs have grown, that the number of building permits is down and that home sales are difficult."

The statement that title insurance costs have grown is erroneous. Title insurance premiums are set in New York State by the Title Insurance Rate Service Association, or TIRSA. Those rates have been the same for Zone 2 in New York State, which includes Erie County, since May 1, 1996. There is absolutely no additional premium being charged for the affirmative insurance against the Seneca Nation of Indians lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for Western New York on Aug. 25, 1993.
