Amherst's Les Ralston lost, 19-4, to Arthur Palac of Hamtramck, Mich., in Tuesday's finals of the National Amateur 19-and-under Boxing Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Palac is the top-ranked fighter in the 165-pound weight class.

Kirk Stauffer of Bradford, Pa., shot a 3-over-par 75 to hold to his first-day lead and win the Coors Western New York PGA Section Championship at Crag Burn Golf Club with a 146 total. Stauffer, who earned $4,200 with the victory, won the tournament by two strokes over Tom Keenan, who shot par Tuesday. Host pro and former champion Lonnie Nielsen shot a 77 to total 151.

At the first round of the LPGA qualifying tournament at Venice, Fla., Lewiston's Tish Certo shot 70 and was tied for fifth. East Aurora's Adele Snyder shot a 77.

Bridget Pettis scored 27 points and seldom-used reserve Maria Stepanova sparked Phoenix during a 19-0 run that carried the Mercury over the Cleveland Rockers, 71-60, and into the WNBA finals. Phoenix, which won the series, 2-1, will open the best-of-three finals at home Thursday against defending champion Houston, which eliminated Charlotte, 2-0. Stepanova, a 6-foot-8 rookie from Russia, had six points, two rebounds, a blocked shot, steal and assist during the run.

World champion Marion Jones extended her winning streak, bolting to victory in the women's 100 meters at the Athletissima Grand Prix in Lausanne, Switzerland. Jones finished in 10.72, a meter ahead of her closest rival, Greece's Ekaterina Thanou.

Ron Winger had a string of six games with no score lower than 233 in moving into the lead during Tuesday's third round of qualifying in the PBA Brunswick Zone Senior National Championship. Winger, who had a high game of 280, had only one game under 200 in the 24 he's bowled so far, downing 5,618 pins. Second-round leader Ray Johnson fell five pins behind Winger.
