Pete Sampras and Martina Hingis -- on Monday received some of the rewards for their position as they were named the top seeds for next week's U.S. Open tennis tournament.
With the exception of Steffi Graf, a five-time women's singles champion, the seedings followed the computer rankings.
Graf, who will be seeking her third straight U.S. Open title -- she missed last year's event after undergoing knee surgery -- is seeded eighth, although ranked 38th on the Corel WTA Tour computer.
Elsewhere, Britain's Greg Rusedski, playing his second event since spraining his left ankle at Wimbledon, beat Sweden's Magnus Norman, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the Hamlet Cup in Commack, L.I.
"There was a big improvement," said Rusedski, coming off a quarterfinal appearance last week in the RCA Championships in Indianapolis. "The ankle is fine."
In New Haven, Conn., Russian sensation Anna Kournikova defeated Barbara Schett of Austria, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the Pilot Pen International.
