An investigation into gunfire led to the arrest of a suspect in a drug-related murder that occurred 22 hours earlier, police said Monday.

Andre James, 22, of Dodge Street was shot to death at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday on Woodlawn Avenue. He suffered multiple wounds to the back from an assault-type rifle.

Late Sunday, Central District Officers John Poisson and Robert Salamone responded to a report of shots fired in the Ferry-Welker Street area and spotted a man with a rifle, police reported. The man threw the rifle, which was a .22-caliber model, into a field and took off running; he was arrested at a Welker Street address.

Jermaine Pace, 18, of Riley Street was charged with possession of a weapon.

In the meantime, Pace was identified as a suspect in the earlier shooting. He was charged Monday with second-degree murder.
