Kirk Stauffer of Bradford, Pa., shot a 1-under-par 71 at the Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora to take the first-day lead in the Coors Western New York PGA Section Championship. Dan O'Neill (South Shore Sports Dome) was a stroke behind at 72 while former champion Lonnie Nielsen, the host pro, was third with 74. The field of 61 area pros will play the final round of the 36-hole, stroke-play event today.
Gary Stevens, the national leader in money won this year with $12.3 million in purses, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery today after injuring his knee while warming up a horse. Stevens underwent an MRI on Monday and it showed a tear in his left knee.
Ray Johnson had high games of 264, 259 and 256 to take a 32-pin during the second round of the PBA's Brunswick Zone Senior National Championship in Jackson, Mich. Johnson of Battle Creek had a 16-game pinfall total of 3,772. Lou Ivancik was second at 3,740, followed by Ron Winger at 3,705, and Pete Couture at 3,693. Pat Parisi of Jamestown, N.Y., was 17th at 3,544.
Houston Comets guard Cynthia Cooper and coach Van Chancellor were named the WNBA's most valuable player and coach of the year for the second straight year. Cooper led the WNBA in scoring for the second straight season with a 22.7 average. Chancellor led the Comets to a league record of 27-3, including a league-best 15-game winning streak. In the semifinals Monday, the Comets won their best-of-three series, 2-0, beating the Charlotte Sting, 77-61. In the other semifinal, the Cleveland Rockers forced a decisive third game with a 67-66 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. Game Three is tonight (8, ESPN) in Cleveland.
