Beginning in January, the cost of a waste-disposal agreement between the Town of Newstead and American Ref-Fuel's waste-to-energy plant in Niagara Falls will increase by $2.52 per ton.

In a letter to Supervisor Donald C. Holmes, American Ref-Fuel business manager John A. Piaggione blamed the increase partially on "increases in landfill disposal costs."

Officials early this year decided to rebid rather than
renew the agreement with
American Ref-Fuel.

The town currently pays $53.60 per ton in tipping fees to dispose of solid waste.

"The town has a long-term contract with American Ref-Fuel," Holmes said. "But at the time it was originally signed, it included a five-year cancellation clause, and we've opted out."
