SLAYING SUSPECT'S ARREST FOLLOWS REPORT OF SHOTS

An investigation into a report of shots fired led to the arrest of a suspect in an apparent drug-related slaying that occurred 22 hours earlier, police said today.

Andre James, 22, of Dodge Street was shot to death about 1:15 a.m. Sunday at 239 Woodlawn Ave. He suffered multiple wounds to the back from an assault-type rifle, Capt. Joseph Riga, chief of the Homicide Section, said.

About 11 p.m. Sunday, Officers John Poisson and Robert Salamone of the Downtown District responded to a report of shots fired in the Ferry-Welker streets area and said they spotted a man with a rifle. The man threw the rifle into a field and took off running and was arrested at a Welker Street address.

Jermaine Pace, 18, of 294 Riley St. was charged with possession of a weapon.

In the meantime, Sgt. Robert Chella and Detectives Reginald Minor and Denise Crawford of the Homicide Section had identified Pace as a suspect in the earlier shooting. He was charged early today with second-degree murder.
