Former Team USA member Mike Faliero won the inaugural Buffalo Bowling Association Members Scratch Tournament on Sunday, defeating top qualifier Steve John Jr., 214-179, in the final at Southside Bowling Center to capture the $400 first prize.
John had a three-game qualifying block of 688, then waited in the wings while his finals opponent was determined in a stepladder-style series of elimination matches.
Faliero defeated Phil Miniace, 221-186, while Michelle Frank was eliminating Pat Brick, 197-183, in first-round matches. Then Faliero, a former George A. Obenauer Masters champion, defeated Frank, 225-160, to get to the final.
The next in the series of BBA Tournament Bowlers Association events, a new feature of the local bowling season, is scheduled for Southtowns Bowling Center Sept. 13. To enter a bowler must be a member of the BBA and pay a $40 entry fee.
