Saratoga lived up to its reputation as being the "graveyard of favorites" Sunday as Stop Traffic defeated favored Colonial Minstrel in the Ballerina Stakes for fillies and mares 3 years old and up.
Colonial Minstrel backed up through the stretch to finish fifth of six, ahead of only exhausted early leader Dixie Flag.
The start of the race was delayed for one minute when both Runup the Colors and Furlough broke through the gate.
Dixie Flag opened a long early lead but ran out of gas nearing the stretch. Colonial Minstrel tracked the leader through the first five furlongs, had nothing left for the drive while Stop Traffic, who had been racing third, drew away with authority for jockey Shane Sellers.
Stop Traffic carried 118 pounds over 7 furlongs in 1:22 1/5 on the fast track to earn the $120,000 winner's share of the $200,000 purse for Diamond A Stable.
The winner paid $12.40, $6.50 and $6.20, Runup the Colors $9.60 and $6.50 and U Can Do It $8.90.
