FIRST BLACK WOMAN IN SENATE TRAILS IN POLLS

Democratic U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun narrowly trails Republican Peter Fitzgerald in her bid for re-election, a poll showed Saturday.

The Chicago Tribune poll of 755 registered voters showed 46 percent favored Fitzgerald, a wealthy, conservative state senator, while 39 percent backed Sen. Moseley-Braun, the first black woman elected to the Senate.

Fifteen percent of the respondents were undecided. The statewide poll was conducted from Aug. 11-17. The survey has a potential margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
