A Northeast District officer shot a German shepherd early Saturday in the midst of pursuing a suspect, according to police reports.

Officer Ron Clark was chasing a suspect who fled the scene of an East Ferry Street domestic dispute around 5 a.m. The pursuit led him northbound through the yards on East Ferry near Fillmore, and over a fence into an Inter Park Avenue backyard.

A large German shepherd ran at him, leaving him no chance to escape over the fence, according to police reports. The officer fired and hit the dog in the chest.

Winston McDuffie, the owner of the 2-year-old dog, said her husband took Bandit to a veterinary hospital, where the dog died.
