Daniel B. Watkins Sr., 82, of Lackawanna, a retired Bethlehem Steel Corp. employee active in Lackawanna community services, died Tuesday (Aug. 18, 1998) in Sisters Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Nuttallburg, W.Va., he worked as a coal miner for 28 years before moving to Lackawanna in 1959.
He joined Bethlehem Steel and worked there for 18 years, retiring in 1978.
In Lackawanna, he served as a First Ward committeeman for 15 years and worked as a member of the Lackawanna Senior Citizens Advisory Board, Civil Rights Board and the Concerned Citizens Board. He also was active in the NAACP and received a community service award from the group in 1995.
A member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, he served as chairman of the deacon board for 25 years and was a church trustee.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lucille West of Lackawanna; three daughters, Sherbadean Stewart of Gahanna, Ohio, Nona Harris and Denise Hood; three sons, Michael of Lackawanna, Daniel Jr. and Donald; a sister, Louise Roberson, and a brother, William, both of Harvey, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Second Baptist Church, 18 Church St., Lackawanna. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Hamburg.
