Alphonse "Fuzzy" Vercruysse of Coomer Road, a retired heavy-equipment operator for the state Department of Transportation, died Tuesday (Aug. 18, 1998) in Newfane Inter-Community Memorial Hospital. He was 78.

A native of Medina, he moved to the Newfane area 22 years ago. He worked 30 years for the DOT before his retirement in 1983.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, wood crafting and bird watching.

His first wife, Florence Williams Vercruysse, died in 1974.

Survivors include his wife, the former V. Doreen Weaver; a son, Russell of Medina; three stepsons, Larry Williams of Crestview, Fla., Ronald Williams and Donald Williams; a stepdaughter, Joyce Williams of Lockport; two brothers, Albert of Oregon and Nester of Eldred, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held today in Kenneth H. Sherrie Funeral Home. Burial was in North Byron Cemetery.
