William "Smitty" Smith, 56, a native of Alabama who enjoyed racing cars and fishing, died Saturday (March 28, 1998) in his 88th Street home after an apparent heart attack.

Smith was born in Greenville, Ala., and moved to Niagara Falls in 1950.

He is survived by his wife, the former Christine Mattison; three sons, William L. Jr., Lorenzo and Juan; five daughters, Demina Sturdivant, Tammy Pierce, and Devina, Dawn and Donna; a brother, Albert Payne; three sisters, Bobby Betton of Atlanta, Mary Maye and Carolyn Beggan; and 15 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held today in Williamson Funeral Home, 635 Main St. Burial was private.
